SMEs have ‘love-hate’ relationship with the internet

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are reaping the benefits of the internet but many feel their online presence does little to improve business efficiency, according to new research.

A study commissioned by Pipex Business shows that 97% of business owners are using email, whilst 94% have a broadband connection. 84% of firms quizzed also have their own website.

Despite the apparently substantial uptake of online facilities, 60% of firms do not believe the internet has enhanced operational efficiency and 46% admitted that the internet adds complications to the running of their business.

The survey also reveals that many companies feel overwhelmed by the complex jargon used by internet providers, adding to the pressures of managing a business in the current technological climate.

Professor Andrew Burke, joint compiler of the study, said: ‘There is no question that the internet has enhanced the performance of SMEs by enabling them to be more innovative [and] more up to speed.

‘The sting in the tail is that the uptake in internet use by SMEs has been so dramatic that most now share these same benefits and so few can garner a competitive advantage.’
